Mole Removal Procedures in Santa Barbara, CA
Do you have a beauty mark on your cheek? Maybe a mole or two on the back of your neck? Have you ever wondered if these moles are healthy?
While most moles are harmless, some moles are an indication of melanoma, a common skin cancer. Whether you want to remove your mole for cosmetic reasons or for health reasons, Lux Dermatology can help. We offer several simple procedures used in Santa Barbara, CA mole removal.
The Mole Removal Process
Moles are color-containing skin cells that clump together. They can result from sun exposure, and they are often genetic. Moles are incredibly common—most adults have between 10 and 40 moles, and that number can change over time.
The method for removing your mole will depend on its size, thickness, and if it needs a biopsy to test for cancer. But the general process goes as follows.
First, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area. If your mole is small, we shave it off with a double-edged razor. Larger moles may require removal with a scalpel and need a few small stitches. In both cases, the scarring is usually minimal.
When to Call About a Mole
There’s no reason to panic or worry about every little mole. There are several signs that will warn you of any possible problems. They’re called the ABCDs of melanoma.
Asymmetry – If your mole is asymmetrical, it will have one half that is different than the other in color, shape, or texture.
Border irregularity – An irregular border will look blurry or uneven.
Color – Any change in color, or a mole that has more than one color, is worth looking at with your doctor.
Diameter – A large mole with a diameter more than six millimeters (or about the size of a pencil eraser) might need removal.
