Developed by Dr. Frederick Mohs in the 1930s, Mohs micrographic surgery has come to be one of the most effective techniques for removing Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Mohs Surgery 101
The advantage of Mohs surgery is that it is specifically design to remove cancer by tracking and removing the “roots.” Patients should keep in mind that the surgery removes only the cancerous tissue, while the normal tissue is spared. It’s important to know that Mohs surgery is not the appropriate treatment for all skin cancers.
- The Mohs surgical procedure starts off with cleaning, marking, and injecting the cancerous area with an anesthetic. The Mohs surgeon then removes the visible caner, along with a thin layer of additional tissue. This procedure only takes a few minutes as the patient waits while the tissue is processed and examined.
- The removed tissue is cut into sections and marked for diagram purposes. The tissue is frozen and the technician removes very thin slices for microscopic examination.
- The Mohs surgeon carefully examines the undersurface of said tissue for any residual cancer. If cancer is found, the surgeon utilizes the diagram to direct the removal of additional tissue.
- The process is repeated many times to locate any remaining cancerous areas within the tissue specimen. When microscopic examination reveals no remaining tumor, the surgical defect is ready for repair.
